Umi

Jack's reward for doing such a great job at the audition was a pet goldfish. He was sooo excited!! We decided to go ahead and get the goldfish in Birmingham because we knew we were going by my Dad's house and we could transfer him into his bowl there. First of all, I like animals. I can't say I am an animal lover but I figure a goldfish is near the bottom of the list for time/energy. The lady at the Petstore gave us a 30 min. speech on the stress level of the fish, the proper water temp for the fish, and how goldfish can live for 20 yrs. if they are treated well. Did she hear the part about this being a 3 yr. old's responsibility? And this big investment cost .13!! Jack was hilarious picking his fish out. He found one and followed it around the tank of about 80 fish trying to keep up with it. We did tell him that he had to chose a solid gold one...no distinct marking!! He named him Umi and he couldn't have been happier!!

When we got home Saturday night, we told Jack he could feed Umi in the morning (under the strict orders from the pet lady). Well about an hour after Jack was suppose to be in bed, he came to us and said he thought Umi looked hungry so he feed him some of his graham cracker. (Jack always eats a snack before bed.) Luckily (?) he said he ate all the peanut butter off before he feed it to Umi. We tried to get all the rest of the soggy cracker out, but Umi already looked a little funny. As you may have guessed, Umi bit the dust in the night. Jack understands now that goldfish can only eat goldfish food. But no we didn't tell him that Umi died. He just thinks our food makes fish VERY sleepy. He couldn't understand why Umi slept all day yesterday. He said Umi was the laziest fish he has EVER seen. ha ha

No worries though Umi #2 has come and Jack has never known the difference. He loves his Umi!! I just wonder how many we will go through in the next 20 yrs. ha ha

Umi #2

We didn't get a pic of the original Umi! RIP Umi #1

and that's a fake turtle in the bowl Jack thought his fish needed a friend

That's hilarious! Smart thinking by making him choose a solid gold one. I'm just curious what kind of expression a fish makes to "look" hungry? :) But at least he was willing to share his graham cracker!

That is so funny! I am with Whitney... How can you tell when a fish looks hungry exactly? Ha!

Well, bless his heart...hope you gave him a proper resting place...no flushing allowed. We have 11 fish now since late November. This little hobby is on the expensive side...maintaince.
